State of Fashion 2018

New Imaginations at State of Fashion 2018

'Unmaking' at State of fashion 2018, the successor to Arnhem Fashion Biënnale, State of Fashion was organised by Foundation Sonsbeek & State of Fashion and curated by Josè Teunissen. State of Fashion is the first large-scale international public event that is entirely devoted to sustainable and honest fashion. The first edition will took place from 1 June until 22 July 2018 in the Melkfabriek in Arnhem.

For the first edition of State of Fashion, curator José Teunissen started a quest for a sustainable future for the fashion industry, dubbed 'Searching for the new luxury'. Some 27,500 visitors from the Netherlands and abroad participated in this search, by visiting the exhibition in Arnhem (the Netherlands), or by taking part in one of over 50 events.

Professional and broad audience
Visitors particularly praised the richness of the exhibition, the combination of location and subject, and the accessibility of the story that the exhibition conveys. An international audience of experts visited the Fashion Colloquium, an international conference by the ArtEZ University of the Arts in collaboration with State of Fashion, which took place just before the opening of the exhibition. But other stakeholders also contributed to the search for new definitions of luxury: more than 30 organisations gathered their networks at State of Fashion for meetings and events.

State of Fashion also showed that the general public is eager to engage in the discussion about the future of fashion. In collaboration with key partners Museum Arnhem and Fashion + Design Festival Arnhem, but also with the Open Air MuseumRozet and Film House Focus, a broad audience discovered that a sustainable future is closer than we tend to think.
