October 2014 - January 2015

The exhibition The Future of Fashion is Now at Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam, the Netherlands aimed to bring together fashion designers and artists especially those with non-western backgrounds and designers from outlying regions of Europe where there was little or no fashion tradition until very recently, who are actively looking to modernize the fashion system. With a selection of eighty works from these designers, the exhibition will showcase a new young generation of designers as the future of fashion. The Future of Fashion is Now was a follow-up of the exhibition The Art of Fashion in 2009. Also, this exhibition was initiated by the fashion programme of the Han Nefkens Fashion on the Edge and guest curator José Teunissen (Head of Modelectoraat ArtEZ).

A garment that responds to emotions, lace patterns that grow from a plant, textile that decomposes itself and fashion that literally zips people together... With a critical look at today’s fashion industry, more than fifty young designers and a number of illustrious innovators such as Viktor&Rolf and Comme des Garçons give us their vision of the fashion of tomorrow. The development of new technologies and a grasp of the importance of sustainability are what is driving young designers worldwide and causing them to expand the borders of the traditional fashion system. With their innovative solutions and fresh designs, this latest generation of fashion designers has arrived at the interface between fashion and art. At the invitation of Han Nefkens Fashion on the Edge, and scouted by fashion experts from around the world, six designers have each produced a new work especially for the exhibition The Future of Fashion is Now: Iris van Herpen (the Netherlands), Digest Design Workshop (China), Lucía Cuba (Peru), Craig Green (Great Britain), D&K (Australia) and Olek (Poland/the United States). This book not only provides an overview of the work by the more than fifty designers being shown at the exhibition, but it also traces the development of and ideas behind the exhibition’s special works.
